Astrid Lindgren was born on a farm outside of the small town Vimberby in Sweden. Astrid had three brothers and sisters: one brother, Gunnar, who was a year older than her, and two younger sisters Stina and Ingegerd. Her childhood was exactly like you can see in the books of Bullerbu. Around the red farmhouse with the apple trees her brothers, sisters and friends had much space to play. They romped on the meadows, in the forest, on the hay-lofts and in the barns. They had a lot of fun.
At the end of her school-time Astrid moved to Stockholm. There she worked as a secretary in an automobile club. She met the man, who married her later. His name was Sture Lindgren. So Astrid Ericsson became Astrid Lindgren. They had two children: Lars and Karin. Astrid had to tell them more and more stories. One day she wrote one of these stories down, because she wanted to make a birthday present for Karin. That was the story about Pipi Longstocking. It was the beginning of her new hobby and she wrote more books.
She worked for the animal rights with the veterinary Kristina Forslund and disputed with the Minister and other important representatives of agriculture. Two years later she received the golden medal from the Swedish Animal Protection Association. Since then they had new and better laws for animal protection.
Astrid is one of the most famous children-book authors in the world. Her works were translated into 70 languages, she wrote more than 100 works and sold more than 130 million copies. She was the first children-book author who got the price for peace from the German bookshops. Some of her most famous books are Pipi Lonkstocking , The children in Bullerbu and Ronja Robber Daughter. The Swedish author wrote her first book at the age of 37. On the 28th of January 2002 Astrid Lindgren died almost blind and deaf when she was 94 years old.
I selected this person, because when I was eight or nine years old my mother gave me a book by Astrid Lindgren and I was very fascinated by it and later I often went to the library to read more and more books by her.
